ThinkFree “or Die” New Java-Based Office Software Application Catching Fire

There was a time when people would download all the

wanted documents, install all the needed software and

then open the documents in the associated application

in order to read, convert, or edit them. It’s not the case anymore.

ThinkFree, a Java based office development company,

has launched a new online suite, “ThinkFree Office Live,” a

Microsoft Office compatible application suite comprised of

word processing, spreadsheet and graphics presentation applications—

all accessible online.

“We’ve been working on this (program) for more than

three years. We want to provide users free access to any document

online—spread sheets; word documents…” said Edward

Coloma of ThinkFree Live Beta development team.

With this new tool, users no longer have to download documents

in various formats and corresponding editing applications.

They can view and edit all the documents within the

ThinkFree Office Live environment.

ThinkFree Office Live also allows users to create, save and

convert documents without downloading anything—a word

document can be created and saved online and then be converted

to other formats such as text or PDF, all in the integrated

ThinkFree Office Live environment.

Even better, these documents can be easily embedded into

websites or blogs for sharing, which allows small business

owners to provide their customers with a new level of document

accessibility.

A user can also choose to let other users edit his/her own

documents without confusion; the “version control” tool coming

with ThinkFree Office Live will track all the editing made

by different users. Those users who share the same document

can subscribe to the “ThinkFree Office Live notice alert.”

Whenever the document is edited, all the subscribers will receive

a notice about the update.

“It’s convenient. You don’t even have to e-mail your colleagues

you’re working with,” said Coloma. “Our philosophy

is ‘anytime, anywhere’. As long as you have Internet access,

regardless of location, you can work on your documents. And

it’s very easy to use.”

Carlos Mangandy who presents ThinkFree Inc. also said,

“Nowadays people don’t have to physically get together to

work on a project. They can be anywhere in the world and still

work together. Many of our users found that ThinkFree Office

Live is a very efficient tool.”

Currently ThinkFree Office Live, now in its beta version,

has more then 700,000 registered users. For those small business

owners who want to avoid installing huge software packages

on their computers, or save money by staying away from

large licensing fees of commercial applications, ThinkFree Office

Live may be a good alternative.

ThinkFree also has other solutions for servers and online

work.

Los Angeles City Public Library in California and Ryder

System, a transportation-providing company based in Florida,

has adopted ThinkFree Server for their daily operation.

LA Public Library considered that the tool had “no limitations

on simultaneous users” and gave them “easier management

resulting in lower operating costs due to less IT Staff

intervention.”

Coloma pointed out that ThinkFree Office Live Beta is so

user friendly that no training is needed if a small business decides

to adopt this new tool.

A prototype from Wistron dubbed the PBook has been spotted at CTIA.

It seems that the device has undergone a name change since then as the PBook looks like exactly the same device. It has a form-factor similar to that of the Sony Vaio P and is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon platform.

This particular unit had a red lid, housing a 12-inch display and a full-sized keyboard.

Laptop Mag reports that it was running a 1GHz CPU with battery life lasting between 8 to 10 hours.

Interestingly, it also features hardware accelerated 3D graphics from ATi.

There is also an optical mouse besides two mouse buttons. As with most ARM-based processors, the unit is designed for 24/7 wireless connectivity via mobile broadband, WiFi and Bluetooth.

Given that ARM-processors cannot use Windows XP/Vista, you are limited to Linux, however the icon-based user interface seemed fairly intuitive.

Apparently the PBook will also support Android and Windows Mobile in the future.

Wistron expects that we could see this unique netbook appear on retail shelves by the third quarter this year. In the meantime, we know that a Wistron netbook with Qualcomm Snapdragon CPU is due to appear at Computex Taipei in June, so hopefully there will be further details then.

Google discovered a privacy glitch that inappropriately shared access to a small fraction of word-processing and presentation documents stored on the company's online Google Docs service.

"We've identified and fixed a bug which may have caused you to share some of your documents without your knowledge. This inadvertent sharing was limited to people with whom you, or a collaborator with sharing rights, had previously shared a document," the company said in a note, quoted at TechCrunch, that the search giant sent to affected people. "The issue only occurred if you, or a collaborator with sharing rights, selected multiple documents and presentations from the documents list and changed the sharing permissions. This issue affected documents and presentations, but not spreadsheets."

Google said in a later statement that the problem affected only 0.05 percent of documents stored at the site and that affected Google Docs users had been notified.

Though the documents were shared only with people whom the Google Docs users had already shared documents, rather than with the world at large, the problem illustrates one downside of cloud computing, in which Internet servers host software previously run on a person's own computer. The flip side of a cloud-computing advantage, that a person can get access to those documents from any Internet-connected computer or smartphone, is that technical problems or hacking attempts also can expose private information.

It should be noted, though, that housing data on a local machine has risks of its own. A lost or stolen laptop can reveal any number of secrets, as Boeing, Hewlett-Packard, the National Institutes of Health, and others have found.

Phoenix Technologies is adding a productivity suite to its HyperSpace instant-on operating system. According to the Milpitas-based software company, both new users and existing subscribers (HyperSpace is available in 1 or 3 year subscriptions) will be able to run several new applications including a word processing program called HyperSpace Write, a spreadsheet editor named HyperSpace Calc, and HyperSpace Show, a PowerPoint clone. A calculator and notepad application are also included.

Earlier this week, Phoenix sent us a ThinkPad T400 with a pre-release build of HyperSpace Hybrid that had HyperSpace Office installed. If you’re familiar with HyperSpace, you will recall that HyperSpace Hybrid is the flavor of the OS which runs concurrently with Windows, while HyperSpace Dual provides the same functionality but dual boots with Windows instead. If you’re unfamiliar with HyperSpace, check out our original HyperSpace hands-on.

The new office apps will be available in both Hybrid and Dual flavors of HyperSpace, but we had a chance specifically to test them in Hybrid, which gave us an excellent chance to work with the same documents on both platforms. Check out our first impressions and hands-on video below.

Compatibility

Phoenix makes no secret of HyperSpace Office’s origins as the splash screen for HyperSpace Write, HyperSpace Calc, and HyperSpace Show all say “powered by ThinkFree,” which indicates that this is a port of ThinkFree Office. The good news is that ThinkFree has created a really strong Microsoft Office-like UI that reminds us of Office 2003, though it is capable of read or writing to several file formats, including the notoriously-difficult-to-open Office 2007 formats. The familiar menus and icons offer a host of typical word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation functionality, though not everything you would find in the latest versions of MS Office.

Window Management and Multitasking

In previous versions of HyperSpace, there was only one real application, the HyperSpace Browser. Now that you have the possibility of opening several different applications at once, the lack of a taskbar or dock becomes all the more apparent. The icons and buttons on the left side of the screen serve only as shortcuts to launch apps, not a way to navigate between open windows. The inability to drag or resize most windows (the browser window can be resized a bit) or to drag/resize the application bar also makes things a little less-than-convenient. Still, if you have multiple documents open in Write, Calc, or Show, they will appear as tabs at the top of the active window. But if you want to switch between HyperSpace Office and another application like HyperSpace Browser, you’ll need to either hit Alt+Tab or close the top app. We hope to see this improve in future builds.

File Management

You can save any documents you create or edit to a special My Documents folder on the HyperSpace partition. A folder icon on the application bar lets you browse through this My Documents folder and even create subfolders underneath it. Unfortunately, there is no way to browse HyperSpace’s My Documents folder when you’re in Windows or browse any part of the Windows hard drive when you’re in HyperSpace.

Sharing Files with Windows

Fortunately, at least in the Hybrid version of HyperSpace, there is a way to move documents from HyperSpace over to Windows. The recommended way to move a file you last edited in HyperSpace Office to Windows is to open the HyperSpace My Documents folder, right click on the document you wish to open, select Open With from the right click menu, and then select Open with Windows from the dialog box which appears. You are then transported to Windows, Microsoft Office is opened, and the document you selected is opened in its appropriate Microsoft Office Application. We did not have a chance to see what happens if you don’t have Office 2007 installed on your Windows partition or if you use OpenOffice.org for Windows instead.

Unfortunately, there is no way to move a document you last edited in Windows over to HyperSpace, short of e-mailing it to yourself and checking your Web-based e-mail in HyperSpace browser. Phoenix tells us that they are working on a better way to share files between Windows and HyperSpace.

Printing

All three HyperSpace Office applications have a print option on their File menus. On our test unit, this feature just did not work and returned the error message: “There is not available print service. You must install printer first.” But there also was no option to add a new printer. When we asked, Phoenix told us that “HyperSpace Hybrid allows you to print documents via Windows Vista. In future releases we will be supporting local printing that will allow applications to print document directly from HyperSpace without going to windows.” But the only way we could figure out how to print a HyperSpace Office document from within Vista was to use the method we outlined above to transfer our documents to Microsoft Office.

Early Verdict

Adding an Office Suite is a bold move for an instant-on operating system and something that Splashtop, HyperSpace’s main competitor, has not done. However, we’re really looking forward to a future build where you can easily print from within HyperSpace. where you can seamlessly share files with Windows, and where it’s easy to move and resize windows. The platform still lacks a built-in media player, an e-mail client, Skype, and a photo viewer though we hope to see those in the future.

1. EtherPad

EtherPad offers real-time editing and collaboration of plain text documents. It includes a mini chat room and shows each user’s edits with their own color in real time. Also nice is the ability to save and restore revisions.

The interface is a little barebones and too many common features we’ve grown accustomed to in office suites are missing but this is a good solution for basic brainstorming sessions for groups of people in real time.

There are some major negatives: First, you can’t store any documents online as you can with other solutions and you have to track each and every cryptic URL. Additionally, there’s no clean and easy way to export finished documents and you also can’t import or open Microsoft Office documents like the other options can.

2. Google Docs

Google Docs offers all three office apps for creating documents, spreadsheets and presentations. They also offer good sharing features which means you can collaborate with others in real-time at the same time on the same documents.

There’s also an option to post the document to a blog or website and have any changes updated automatically by itself. This makes it sort of like a wiki and a blog publishing platform. A downside to Google Docs is that you can’t chat with others inside Google Docs, but then again, you can always use Gtalk.

3. Zoho

Like Google Docs, Zoho offers a suite of apps to create online documents, spreadsheets and presentations (plus databases), but their sharing features are much better. Not only can you invite others to view or edit documents, but you can create groups to make them easier to manage.

Additionally, like Google Docs you can publish any doc to your blog or website, but it also adds a new feature that Google doesn’t offer which is the ability to make any document public. Zoho provides a unique URL and RSS feed for every public document which is updated automatically whenever a change is made.

You can also chat live with collaborators by using a tab on the left that shows all collaborators, making it easy to communicate while editing a document together in real time. And, if you need to go back and check older versions of the document you can.

4. Microsoft Office Live

Microsoft Office Live allows existing owners of Microsoft Office to share and collaborate with other Office owners by using their Microsoft Office Online account. It’s important to note that this service is not free and if you do not have Office installed on your computer then you’re out of luck.

In order to make this a truly useful solution, Microsoft will need to provide a true web version of their apps in the cloud. However, if you just want to share Microsoft Office documents with colleagues that have Office then this could be a viable option.

5. ThinkFree

ThinkFree provides a slick suite of online apps like Zoho and Google Docs. You can use the web versions of their apps or install a desktop client that syncs with your online account which will allow you to work offline. Zoho and Google claim to let you work offline via Google gears but you can’t create new documents offline, only view existing ones. Thinkfree allows you to do everything just like the full blown Microsoft Office suite.

The service offers great sharing options for individuals or groups. Each document is Microsoft Office compatible and if the person you’re working with doesn’t have Microsoft Office they can view documents with a free ThinkFree viewer. ThinkFree also provides an offering similar to Microsoft Project with up to three free projects. Another plus? You get 1 GB of storage online for your documents.

The most commonly-cited alternative to anything that's expensive and closed (Windows, Office) is something that's free and open (Linux, OpenOffice). But a third alternative has made headway: something proprietary, but either free or so cheap you won't care.

Consider ThinkFree Office, an MS Office competitor that's not in the vein of OpenOffice. It's a for-pay product and it's not open source, but it's to be offered at $50 or less for the whole suite -- and, most crucially, also to be offered as an add-on with netbooks at what I imagine is a price substantially lower than anything Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) would offer.

I gave ThinkFree a whirl on a provided Atom-powered Dell (Dell) Inspiron 910 Mini, and from the outside it is indeed remarkably close to the classic Office 97-through-2003 look that most of us are familiar with. I didn't have trouble opening existing Office documents, either (including files save in Office 2007's OOXML format). There's a whole slew of likeable features, such as the automatic document sync that lets you access your work anywhere you have an Internet connection, or the save as .PDF function.

When I spoke with the folks at ThinkFree, they cited the interface as one of the program's big potential attractions -- it so closely resembles Word (and the rest of office) that most people will never know the difference. The major competition in this regard is of course OpenOffice, although in my opinion the differences are minor. See for yourself:

If you want some hands-on time, you can snag a thirty-day tryout of the netbook edition.

I'm curious to see if this will, indeed, make a significant dent in either Office (including Microsoft's on-line version of same) or OpenOffice on netbooks. I suspect it'll be something of the same situation that's arisen with WordPerfect, which now comes as a preload on some desktop machines but doesn't appear much of anywhere else. But there are ideas here worth looking at, especially the ones that take advantage of the fact that a netbook needs a network connection to be truly useful.

This post describes the authors experience, almost losing his data on a RAID disk set. He also gives good details on why RAID is not a backup and how he rectified the situation. Remember: RAID is not a backup!

When working with corporate systems, a complete, reliable, and tested backup system is important. RAID does not protect you against many (or even most) disasters that could happen.

RAID is designed to protect against one thing: disk failure. It does not protect against user error, operator error, site destruction, and many more possibilities.

So how do I back things up? I must admit, I’ve improved my backup strategies of late. I currently have several tools that I use and would recommend to you:

SpiderOak. This is an online backup service which offers the first 2Gb backup free. They also maintain multiple version backup, so if you want a file from two versions back, it’ll still be there. This service is worth paying for, I’d say.
For my Mac, I’ve used PsyncX periodically (albeit not automated). It has come in handy more than once as my laptop died several times - I’ve one of those iBooks that was notorious for video hardware that failed annually (and Apple would fix for free, but never admitted fault). If you’ve a Mac, get an external drive and use PsyncX to save your home directory off. Also recommended: put your applications in your home directory, not the system directory: restoring your home directory will then be enough to get your applications back.
For UNIX, the similar alternative to PsyncX is rsync: again, get an external drive and save your home directory off to it regularly.
Also, come at it from the other direction: save your configuration by putting it into a cfengine or puppet setup and saving that as well. If the machine fails, running cfengine or puppet on startup will restore the system to its original state.
One other item - that may seem a bit unusual - is using Thinkfree Office. Thinkfree Office gives you a way to save documents locally and have them mirrored in the Internet cloud - and you can also manipulate your documents on the web as well. Of course, this is only entirely true for documents that Thinkfree Office can edit.

This morning I met with Edward Coloma from ThinkFree, developers of the ThinkFree Office suite. Back in October, the company introduced a demo of the productivity suite specifically for netbooks and today the company showed me the software running on Qualcomm-based hardware. They’re looking to have their product available for Android during the first half of 2009, but of course it all depends on hardware vendors since there aren’t any Android netbooks on the market… yet.

The test hardware I saw ThinkFree software running on was the same Qualcomm concept notebook we saw last month. The specs were meager by today’s netbook standards: the CPU was clocked under 600 MHz and had limited memory: 256MB. Yet the productivity demonstration ran reasonably well and is already optimized for touch controls. The concept hardware had a touchscreen and it was easy to tap and navigate through the simple menus. Overall, the software was pretty impressive considering it was ported over to support an ARM environment; it surely doesn’t hurt that it’s heavily based in Java.

ThinkFree is working with various OEMs to get the suite bundled on netbooks, but is considering a netbook version for sale. Too early for pricing, but their full version or Windows, Mac or Linux notebooks runs around $50 right now. My gut says the right price point for a netbook optimized version is around $30 to $35. The key selling point is the software’s ability to work both on- and off-line. We simply don’t have connectivity available all the time on our netbooks. Why sacrifice productivity when disconnected if you don’t have to?

I’ll be looking deeper at ThinkFree’s solution as they provided me with an Asus Eee PC 1000H review unit for 30 days, complete with their netbook software. Meanwhile, check out the gallery.

Remotely hosted web applications have been around for some time, but as the software gets refined and broadband access improves, web apps like ThinkFree.com may give your desktop office suite a run for the money.

One web offering that stands out is ThinkFree Online, and the price is the best yet – free! The service allows you to create, collaborate on and store your documents and files with a generous 30 GB of storage space.

The company is a subsidiary of Haansoft Corporation, a Korean computer software company based in Seoul. ThinkFree was founded in 1999 as a java-based office developing company. The ThinkFree Office, a desktop alternative to Microsoft Office was first released in 2000. It has had a couple of updates since then and the current 3.0 version is designed to be almost indistinguishable from Microsoft Office.

ThinkFree Office 3.0 is one of the few alternative programs to fully support Microsoft’s latest format from Office 2007 so that you can open files without risk of corrupting the layout or content. Business users will like the fact that there is no need to spend money or time training employees as the interface operates just like Microsoft Office. ThinkFree products use the same file formats across operating systems so they can be opened whether the user is on Windows, Linux or Mac machines. Best of all, ThinkFree Office 3.0 costs only $49.95 for an individual license while the cheapest form of Microsoft Office (the Home and Student Edition) costs three times as much.

In 2005, ThinkFree released its first online service and has continued to improve and add to the service ever since. You can now store up to 30 gb of documents on ThinkFree’s servers so you or your collaborators can access your documents any time and from any where. If you already have the desktop version of the software, the online application is ideal for being able to access the documents that you worked on from your home computer.

ThinkFree isn’t quite up to taking over Microsoft’s market share, though. Microsoft Office does have some advanced features that aren’t available with ThinkFree products. For the average user, though, it will be the perfect office suite as it has the three mainly used programs – word processor, spreadsheet application and presentation application. The online ThinkFree also offers a handy beta tool called Note which is a blog editor and should prove popular.

Being java based, ThinkFree does tend to be a bit slower in response than other programs of this nature. It also only will only open one document at a time so it’s more difficult to work back and forth when needed. There is one feature that I didn’t expect in this type of software and that is the ability to export as PDF. There is also a very handy file conversion tool within the online office suite which also can be very useful.

All in all, ThinkFree Office online is one of the best applications of its kind. The interface is easy to grasp and navigate so there isn’t a sharp learning curve for new users. Since it works in most operating environments, you are not limited to collaborating only with users of the same operating system. Used in conjunction with the low-cost desktop version, anyone can work away from home and not worry about backups because of the large storage capacity.

When cloud computing thought about security and privacy (in ThinkFree) !

As millions of consumers begin to take advantage of cloud computing it’s apparent that major concerns including security and privacy are top of mind. So how are companies such as ThinkFree ensuring the security and privacy of the millions of documents that sit on the cloud?

For starters, ThinkFree begins at their homepage by providing users with SSL secured sign-in process. By providing protocols which deliver security and data integrity for communications over TCP/IP networks such as the Internet, ThinkFree ensures information hijackers from decrypting account information. Furthermore, ThinkFree enhances their security even more by working with third party security companies such as Verisign which provide two important services – encryption of data transmission and identity verification.

But ThinkFree doesn’t end their security measures there! Security structure is divided into four sections:

Ø First is the network security – ThinkFree runs a hardware based network firewall and IDS (Intrusion Detection System). Which ensures that all communications and data packets are real-time filtered and audited in addition to keeping unauthorized people off the network.

Should there be any suspicious access, leakage or attack, ThinkFree’s existing security system immediately blocks all data transfers. A real-time report is sent to the security manager via email and mobile message incase they are remotely located.

Ø ThinkFree’s second layer sits within server security. By only allowing top management direct access to servers in the local network environment, unauthorized remote users cannot directly access any of ThinkFree’s servers. This method delivers an extra layer of security by requiring users to be localized whenever directly accessing any of ThinkFree’s servers.

Ø Protecting user’s uploaded data and documents is a critical portion of cloud computing. ThinkFree leverages D-DRM (Document-Digital Right Management). Perhaps the most impressive thing about today's Qualcomm showcase was a test rig showing the Snapdragon 8250 system-on-a-chip playing a 720p video. The chip (under the yellow tag in the picture left - click to enlarge) is rather smaller than my thumbnail and it did not even feel warm to the touch.

The Snapdragon uses an ARM-based CPU core, and TI offers a similar range of SoCs, which are targetted at the emerging netbook category and will compete with systems using Intel's Atom chips. There seems little chance that Atom-based platforms will be able to match these SoCs on power efficiency very soon.

Staff marketing manager Anita Hix, showing off the prototype 8250-based Alaska netbook(below left and right), pointed out that it is not just the processor drain you need to take into accout. Snapdragon packs a wealth of functionality that Intel has to put on peripheral chips.

The ARM-based core architecture supports Linux, Windows Mobile, Android, and Qualcomm's own Brew Mobile Platform. Adobe has pledged to work with ARM to improve Flash support, and Microsoft's rival Silverlight is expected to work with Windows Mobile platform. Even so it remains to be seen if these new platforms will be able to match the PC web experience.

The success of the iPhone and iPod Touch is forcing site designers to beware of being PC-centric but buyers of first generation devices will still probably need to balance the Snapdragon's cool power efficiency against the wealth of software available on the PC.

The Alaska was running an open-source office suite called Thinkfree, which claims to be Microsoft-compatible, and there seems no reason why it should not service the basic needs of people on the move.

As least as important, in my view, is the question of whether these non-Intel platforms can find handwriting-recognition technology to match that of Microsoft's Tablet PC. software. .

That this has yet to take off in a big way is surely due to the fact that tablets have so far been very expensive, power hungry, and cumbersome. Screen texture also needs to be improved, but meanwhile I see no reason why mobile screens should not support the use of paper-like disposable overlays for writing.

This could be a task suitable for the dual-core Snapdragon, but Qualcomm today did not seem to have considered the possibility. The first device, Intel based or not, to crack the input problem on these small devices could scoop the market.

I think I am a technologist at heart. On the other hand in today’s world technology and automation are what let you scale and manage your business. Best to put it in early rather than let your business get out of control. So here is my latest up date.

First of all Thinkfree was an extremely smart decision to use. It blows away Yahoo Groups and all the others. Now my partner and I can maintain a shared file system seamlessly and it fixes my project management problem. Unfortunately I have to use Excel as the project manager but that is better than the alternatives (like Daptiv, LiquidPlanner, etc). The reason is that Thinkfree let’s me keep mirror copies on my desktop and on the server and let’s me synchronize them seamlessly. I can work online or offline. And the best part is it is very fast. Excel runs in real time without the speed bumps of SaaS based solutions. It is beautiful. YOU need to use it.

Second thing is I signed up for Amazon EC2 yesterday. EC2 is Amazon’s cloud computing service. I can get a virtual server that is highly scalable without installing my own hardware. Right now Inside Edge is hosted on my dedicated server in a colo center along with my other business Flycatcher. I want to separate the businesses financially; I don’t want one business bringing down the other; and I want to bring up SugarCRM for Inside Edge and I don’t want to put that on Flycatcher.

I spent 4 hours trying to get a server instance running on EC2. The instructions are terrible. It is all command line driven with no GUI interface. And when things don’t work you are left high and dry. The system has little real time feedback or messaging and Amazon offers no email or live person support. So when I got to the point of using SSH to connect to their servers and all I got back was connection refused, I was stuck. Amazon forums were of little help.

Today I took a look at GoGrid. These guys look like they are actually in the business of supporting commercial users of the service. They have a GUI interface, static IP, load balancing and best of all 24/7 live support. I can get started for about $99 per month and scale from there. I’ll let you know how that goes.

THINKFREE DESIGNED ThinkFree Office 3 specifically to emulate Microsoft Office 2003 applications as exactly as possible, and the company managed to come close.

The look and feel of the three components, Write, Calc and Show, are about as close to their Microsoft counterparts as you can get. Every ruler, button and menu is nearly exactly in the place a Microsoft Office user would expect them to be.

With each of the ThinkFree applications, we were able to open a corresponding Microsoft file, make changes and save it without a problem, for the most part. The only area that ThinkFree fell short was with Calc, which was unable to keep certain Excel macros and data validation, but otherwise left everything intact.

We were pleased to see that ThinkFree Office came with 1G of free online storage. When we added files to the ThinkFree Manager, they automatically synchronized with that online space. These files could also be accessed by logging in to the My Office Web interface from anywhere. They also could be published and shared among other users of My Office.

There is a 10M limit to the file size you can upload, but only the most extravagant spreadsheet or presentation documents should approach that limit. Through the My Office interface we were also able to access a beta version of Workspace, which we found to be a versatile project management/online collaboration tool.

We were also able to save ThinkFree Office files as Adobe Acrobat PDF documents as easily as any other file format. The ability to do this without external software is definitely an advantage.

We found it unusual that, although ThinkFree programs could save in many different formats, they have absolutely no native file formats. Although this isn’t a particular advantage or disadvantage, we thought that it was worth mentioning.

ThinkFree Office can be installed on Linux and Mac computers in addition to Windows ones.

The retail price of ThinkFree Office is one of its best features. A retail price of $50 is a good one, and the government price of $15 is a fantastic bargain.

What is CDN ?

A content delivery network or content distribution network (CDN) is a system of computers networked together across the Internet that cooperate transparently to deliver content most often for the purpose of improving performance, scalability, and cost efficiency, to end users.

CDN Benefit
The capacity sum of strategically placed servers can be higher than the network backbone capacity. This can result in an impressive increase in the number of concurrent users. For instance, when there is a 10 Gbit/s network backbone and 100 Gbit/s central server capacity, only 10 Gbit/s can be delivered. Harvest – Tracks times, logs expenses, and keeps track of account receivables and revenue. You can use graphical reports to see the distribution of your company’s resources in a visual, intuitive way, and quickly create an invoice to bill a client. Harvest lets you do it all, so you can run your business with style and ease.

Blist – Sharing your lists online is simple. Consumers and knowledge workers now have the power of a relational database, combined with a user interface that’s easier than a spreadsheet.

PayPal – With a free app now available for download onto the iPhone, PayPal users can buy and sell their eBay tchotchkes from anywhere in the world – whether or not there’s an available Wi-Fi connection within range.

Vello – An audio-conferencing service that allows you to call participants simultaneously, making meetings more productive. There are no dial-in numbers or access codes to remember. First, upload contacts from Microsoft Outlook using the Vello Contact Sync Tool. Then select the participants from your computer or mobile phone, press “Call Now” or “Schedule,” and the call begins. Simple as that.

Remember the Milk – PC World says that this task-management application “reinvents the to-do list.” Features include an intuitive interface that makes managing tasks fun; maps to see where your tasks are located in the real world; the ability to share, send and publish tasks and lists with contacts; and an option to receive reminders via e-mail, text and instant messenger from AIM, Gadu-Gadu, Google Talk, ICQ, Jabber, MSN, Skype and Yahoo!
