2009 Budget Pressure: How Government Administrations Can Cut Costs with Cloud Computing : Use ThinkFree Web Office Server
2009 Budget Pressure: How Government Administrations Can Cut Costs with Cloud Computing
Municipal authorities and local governments took a leadership role when it came to deploying wireless internet networks and truly embraced WiFi technology for the good of their citizens. This created impulses for the industry still felt today. Fast forward to today and we have a much more hesitant environment. Budget cuts make investments in new technology difficult. What, however if such investments in turn would be able to reduce overall spending and contribute to keeping within the limited 2009 budget?
Currently government administration processes are largely paper-based, incurring printer maintenance costs such as toner and repairs as well as the cost of paper itself. The shift to all-electronic paperless processes will not only drastically lower these aforementioned costs, but it will make the processes themselves much more efficient. Thus reducing processing times and overall administration workload.
The budget crisis requires government administrations to take a very close look at all processes and their costs. By eliminating individual PC workstations with full software installations and instead powering staff terminals through the cloud, government administrations can significantly reduce the cost for software licensing while at the same time not having to worry about individual installation, upgrades and maintenance of software products.
Deploying cloud computing also meets the strictest data confidentiality and backup requirements. With no physical printouts, no document copies saved on individual staff terminals and automated file backup in the cloud, the top three reasons for data security breaches are effectively disabled.

Santa Clara, Calif. (May 5, 2009) – ThinkFree, Inc., a leader in next-generation office productivity solutions, today announced that it has reached an agreement with the City of Ventura, Calif., to deploy its ThinkFree Server Integrator solution for 250 of the city's administration staff. ThinkFree has been chosen to form an integral part of the City of Ventura’s overall e-Government strategy, and the deployment of its Server Integrator solution is expected to contribute significantly to overall TCO savings.
“Given the current budget pressures, we are forced to closely look at all of our administrative processes and how we can become more efficient and cut spending at the same time,” said John Emerson, senior IT executive, City of Ventura. “ThinkFree’s cost-effective solution, hosting office applications and documents in the cloud, was easily tailored to meet our specific needs and integrated seamlessly with other groupware applications we have rolled out as part of our overall e-Government initiative. The best roundtrip Microsoft Office compatibility coupled with a highly optimized version for in-the-field netbook deployments made ThinkFree the clear choice for the City of Ventura.”
ThinkFree Server Integrator is a componentized version of ThinkFree Office Write, Calc and Show applet-based applications that are offered separately as a product. Server Integrator is designed to enable customers to use the Java-based ThinkFree Office (Microsoft Office 2007-compatible) within their existing IT infrastructure with easy implementation. Secure data access and document protection is provided by limiting data access to centralized storage so that confidential documents can be quickly and simultaneously viewed or edited.
In addition to the deployment of ThinkFree for desktop computers, the City of Ventura’s e-Government strategy places lightweight, ultra-mobile netbook computers into the hands of its mobile workforce. From police officers to water utility crews, ThinkFree Mobile Netbook Edition enables users to retrieve documents and compile reports while in the field. With ThinkFree, they are presented with the same user interface and functionality they are accustomed to from the desktop computer version.
“As government administrations increasingly turn to cloud computing alternatives for cost-effective office productivity software, ThinkFree Server Integrator offers a solution that enables a quick, simple and scalable deployment within existing IT environments,” said Su Jin Kim, CEO of ThinkFree. “From round-trip Microsoft Office compatibility to mobile in-the-field use on netbook computers, ThinkFree presents the user with a common, simple interface and allows for seamless transition across devices and platforms.”
Designed for organizations of all sizes, ThinkFree Server Integrator is a set of API solutions for developers to rapidly integrate document editing and viewing capabilities into existing IT infrastructure, webmail, groupware, ERP and CRM platforms. It is a highly scalable solution unlike other hosted office platforms that make use of terminal server technology. It features customizable integration for unique environments (http, ftp, https, etc.) and supports third-party security certificates and integration with centralized document storage through simple API customization.

World Best Online Office : ThinkFree Office Live Beta
Document Sharing and Viewing From A Web Browser: No Apps To Download
In most all of the online sharing web sites you come across, in order to read a Microsoft Office or PDF document you have to download the document and open it in in the associated application.
Think Free makers of a namesake Microsoft Office competitor has launched a new online suite of features through,
Think Free Office Live Beta.
With this new tool you no longer have to download a PDF, Office document or several other file formats to view them. You can view them all within the Think Free Office Live environment.
Even better, these documents can be easily embedded into website or blogs for easier sharing. Imagine being able to provide your customers with a new level of document accessibility through this new tool.
Think Free Office Live beta also enables you to convert documents.
I took an Office 2007 Word document and converted it to text and PDF. The text conversion went well, except the line breaks were not recognized so the converted document was a mess. The conversion to PDF was just fine.
If you are looking to a) get away from installing huge software packages on your computer b) savemoney by not buying Microsoft Office c) have advanced document access features then looking at solutions such as Think Free and Zoho are what you’ll need to do. Think Free Office is a software suite costing $50. Think Free has other solutions for servers and online work as well. Zoho operates completely in the cloud and has about 20 applications (database, crm, word processor and more). Zoho is free for personal use, business users pay from $3 depending on the users and features they need.
For those who use Microsoft Office - I guess that’s 90%+ of business professionals, Microsoft’s Office Live Workspace is something you should check out.

Best CTIA 2009 Wireless Finalist : Wistron pBook powered by ThinkFree that is unique productivity suite for Qualcomm Snapdragon Platform.
Best CTIA 2009 Wireless Finalist : Wistron pBook powered by ThinkFree.

A prototype from Wistron dubbed the PBook has been spotted at CTIA.
It seems that the device has undergone a name change since then as the PBook looks like exactly the same device. It has a form-factor similar to that of the Sony Vaio P and is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon platform.
This particular unit had a red lid, housing a 12-inch display and a full-sized keyboard.
Laptop Mag reports that it was running a 1GHz CPU with battery life lasting between 8 to 10 hours.
Interestingly, it also features hardware accelerated 3D graphics from ATi.
There is also an optical mouse besides two mouse buttons. As with most ARM-based processors, the unit is designed for 24/7 wireless connectivity via mobile broadband, WiFi and Bluetooth.
Given that ARM-processors cannot use Windows XP/Vista, you are limited to Linux, however the icon-based user interface seemed fairly intuitive.
Apparently the PBook will also support Android and Windows Mobile in the future.
Wistron expects that we could see this unique netbook appear on retail shelves by the third quarter this year. In the meantime, we know that a Wistron netbook with Qualcomm Snapdragon CPU is due to appear at Computex Taipei in June, so hopefully there will be further details then.
